WORLD BLOOD DONOR DAY
Every year on June 14, World Blood Donor Day is observed in many countries around the world.
It is a day to remind us all to go out and give blood as well as to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products.
June 14 was chosen as the day to recognize World Blood Donor Day as it is the birth date of Karl Landsteiner (1868-1943) an Austrian biologist, physician, and immunologist who developed the ABO blood group system which enables physicians to transfuse blood without endangering a patient’s life.
The first successful blood transfusion was performed by Reuben Ottenberg (1882-1959) an American physician and hematologist at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York in 1907.
Have you ever donated blood or do you donate on World Blood Donor Day?
