As a child, I was very sick and spent a few weeks in the hospital. Nurses and lab constantly came into my room, doctors on occasion. None of them spoke to me, just in and out doing their duties. I was so scared and no one offered to comfort me. I remember it as if it were yesterday.
Most of the nurses were just so-so, but some were mean and hateful! However, there was one who was kind and caring! She took time to speak to me, to comfort me, even tried and succeeded in making me smile. To a sick and scared child, that meant so much to me!
At that young age, I decided I wanted to be a nurse when I grew up but not just any nurse. I would be a kind and caring nurse. I’d take the best care possible of my patients. And, that’s exactly what I did!
I smile every year when I get birthday and Christmas cards from patients that I’ve taken care of over the years. They tell me how thankful they are to have had me as their nurse and how blessed they feel for the way I treated them and took care of them. It always makes me feel good and warms my heart when I read their notes to me! I’ve relocated a couple times thru the years with my family and have had patients and their family members cry when I told them I’d be leaving the area. I always had to promise them I’d send them my new address.
Nursing is not an easy career and don’t you let anyone tell you that it is. I have worked in various positions, units, and facilities…nursing is hard! But, the one thing you have to do if you’re a nurse is this – no matter how busy you are, no matter how understaffed you are, and no matter what went on in the room before you came into the present patient’s room – you HAVE TO make that particular patient feel like they are your number one priority, no matter what!!
