Ok, who doesn’t love jeans? Young, old, kids, teens, and adults! Blue jeans, denim jeans, just plain jeans, or whatever you call them. I’m a jeans wearer! Nothing is more comfortable to me than my jeans. Am I a denimhead? More on that in a sec.
Have you ever wondered what the little pocket over the right front pocket is for? Do you think you know what it’s for? Most might think it’s for coins.

According to a blog post on the Levi Strauss website, the small pocket was originally included in the design of the jeans as protection for a pocket watch. It goes on to say that the pocket is extremely useful for holding tiny trinkets, and the faded and worn nature it takes on over time is loved by denimheads.
There’s that word denimheads again. Doing a Google search, I came up with some interesting info:
• 11 Denim Heads To Follow On Instagram
• A hashtag search for denimheads on Instagram came up with 7,219 results
• Denimheads: People who don’t wash their jeans
• Back to Levi Strauss who has a page called Denimheads
I thought I might be a denimhead but after reading that they’re people who don’t wash their jeans…well, I’m having second thoughts. So, did you know what the little pocket was for, and are you a denimhead?

My husband puts things in that little pocket — like his box of noon pills if we’re out and about — and then has to dig like crazy to get to them. It’s very small.
Yes Kris, that pocket is very small, just big enough for a pocket watch or noon time meds 🙂 You know, maybe back in the day pocket watches were very small 🙂
Yes, very tiny, Kris. That’s why I rarely use it. Too hard to get my fingers around whatever I may have put in there.
I actually did know about the little pocket, and I LOVE mine. In fact, I use it for my pocket watch. It was originally designed for farmers, to be more precise. They needed to know the time while out working the fields but they didn’t want to wear a wastecoat just to keep their watch.
Great post! have a blessed week,
Thank you Johanna and glad you stopped by my blog 🙂 You have a blessed rest of the week and weekend 🙂
I had no idea what that little pocket was for! How interesting.
Thanks Mother of 3 🙂
HA! I learned something new today! Makes perfect sense! I have often wondered why they would make a pocket too small to put anything in it. I am like you, I was thinking I might be a denimhead, but….
Oh yes Sylvia, a denimhead is definitely not what I thought it was!!
I had no idea what that pocket is for and I never use it, but it’s good to know! Thanks for sharing at the Weekend Blog Hop at My Flagstaff Home! –Jennifer
You’re welcome Jennifer and thanks for dropping by!
I always thought it was for tucking the little plastic token from the hospital parking lot into. That makes the person who thought to put it there in eighteen-whatever-it-was incredibly foresighted.
That’s a great way Ellen to use the little pocket!!
I did not know but it does make sense.
Elsie, I don’t think a lot of us living today had any idea!
Ok, I loved this post because I did not know all these details about the tiny pocket and jeans in general. I love jeans but for some reason mostly in fall and winter. It is too hot for jeans right now here in Minnesota. 🙂 Thank you for sharing! (PS– glad I found your blog!}
Hi Angie, thanks for the comment and glad you found my blog too! Now I’m off to check yours out 🙂
Learn something new every day! I never knew that about the little pocket. I wondered years ago but stopped wondering in recent times. BTW, I do like to wash my jeans, so I guess I’m not a demin-head.
Yeah I wash mine too!
I thought the small pocket was for “change”, but the watch makes since most men had pocket watches when Levi first started making jeans. And I love denim in the winter, too hot here in the summer for me, though there are tons of women that wear them even in 110 degree summers, ugh. I tired denim capris, still too hot for me!!
Yeah Karren, I’m a denim all the time type person, love my jeans!!
Thanks Dee, I love learning new and little things like that, very interesting. I like pocket watches, in my early nursing days we always had a pocket watch to take pulses etc. Unfortunately, my uniform was not made from Denim.
We will feature your post on the next Blogger’s Pit Stop.
Ah Kathleen, I’m a nurse too! Never used a pocket watch though as my wrist watch had a second hand on it. As for denim, I did have a lab jacket that was faux denim that I wore at times with my white uniform top and pants, it was so cute! Thanks so much for the feature, appreciate it!
Hey! Saw this post was featured! Congratulations!
Yes, yay, thanks!!
Hello Dee! Congratulations on being featured on Blogger’s Pit Stop. As for the little pocket on jeans, I always assumed it was for coins. I rarely use it, as it’s hard to get anything in and out of that tiny pocket. However, on occasion if I have something small that I don’t want to lose, I’ll slide it in there. And, yes, I do wash my jeans! There was a time when I even ironed them–but not anymore.
Oh my gosh Christie, been a looong time since I ironed jeans 🙂
I thought the pocket was for coins, and never imagined that it was for pocket watches. My grandaddy use to tell time with a pocket watch, but I haven’t seen anyone use a pocket watch in decades.
Lisa, it’s been a long time since I saw anyone use a pocket watch. My son has my great grandfather’s solid gold pocket watch.
