THE BEST WAY TO CUT A WATERMELON

Ah, summertime. It’s the best time of the year for me! The temps are nice and warm (it’s a hot and sunny day at 95 degrees right now as I sit outside typing this)…and there’s watermelon! Who doesn’t love watermelon?

When I was a child growing up the adults always cut watermelon like this. Ok fine, right? Wrong!

Cutting it like this was and still is messy! It gets all over your chin and cheeks, sticky water running down your neck, all over your hands and running down your arms as you try to eat it!

When I became an adult, I began cutting it into pieces. Just cut the end off of the watermelon, slice off a round piece from the open end, lay it down on a plate or cutting board, cut around the rind and remove it, then cut into bite size pieces.
After becoming a mom and when my kids were old enough to eat watermelon back in the 1980s, I figured out a better solution for them. I knew there had to be a better way and I had never seen anyone cut a watermelon like this.

Voilà! No more mess! No more sticky chin and cheeks! No more sticky water all over a toddler’s neck, hands, and arms!
Again, just cut the end off of the watermelon, slice off a round piece from the open end, lay it down on a plate or cutting board, but this time cut it like you would a pizza leaving the rind intact so little fingers can hold onto it.
Obviously the pizza cutting method caught on for watermelon as I see it all the time now. Maybe it’s because eating pizza is such a common thing for Americans, huh?
So simple! Great for kids and adults! Of course the old timers (meaning those the age of and older than my grandparents) would never cut a watermelon this way!
Speaking of grandparents, I recall my grandmother always opening up a box of ice cream on the end instead of opening it up like a treasure chest, do you know what I mean? I always wondered why she did it that way as it’s difficult to get the ice cream out and you get the sticky sides of the box all over your hand and ice cream scoop.
She used to pour her coffee onto a saucer and sip it too! Have you seen anyone do that?
Anyway, how do you cut your watermelon?
