JUST CALL ME DEE
I hate my name! That’s why I go by Dee. Plain and simple, Dee.
I was named Deirdre, supposedly an old Irish family name as my maternal figure’s family has Irish roots so I got stuck with this ugly name! She insisted that I be proud to be named Deirdre. However, she hated her given name and shortened it. Go figure!
The intended pronunciation according to my maternal figure was (dee uh druh) or (dee druh) but she couldn’t decide which she liked best. More often than not, it was pronounced as (dee er druh). In elementary school the teachers were the ones that mostly insisted on pronouncing the r after the i.
My brother was named Ryan, another Irish name we were told. However, my sister was named René, our maternal figure said it was French. Funny how a French name gets used and while researching our ancestry I have never found anything related to France!
Do you like your name or wish it were something else?
