Did you know there was a National Doughnut Day? It is observed on the first Friday of June every year in the United States.
History
The occasion was created in 1938 by The Salvation Army in Chicago as a way to honor female volunteers who made and served doughnuts to soldiers serving overseas as a way to boost morale during World War I.
There is another National Doughnut Day observed every year in November but the origins of that one are harder to track down. And, there just happens to be more doughnut observance days that you might not be aware of: International Jelly-Filled Doughnut Day (June), National Cream-Filled Doughnut Day (September), and Buy A Doughnut Day (October). Who knew?
Varieties
Doughnuts come in many varieties – glazed, iced, filled, powdered, sprinkled, etc. Oh, and we can’t forget doughnut holes! My favorites are chocolate iced raspberry filled, chocolate iced glazed, and double chocolate. I know people do make their own doughnuts but I have never made them myself. I don’t recall the last one I ate as I no longer consume anything with sugar in it.
Brands
There are a few popular brands here in the United States. The two that immediately come to mind when I think about the fried rings of dough are Krispy Kreme (founded 1937) and Dunkin’ (founded 1950). The Dunkin’ website says – “Dunkin’ is the world’s leading baked goods and coffee chain, serving more than 3 million customers each and every day.” I like Krispy Kreme and Dunkin’ equally the same. There are some mom and pop shops that I like too!
Spelling
The official dictionary spelling is doughnut. However, spelling it as donut has been around since the late 1800s. The Dunkin’ Donuts chain (now referred to as Dunkin’) made the spelling as donut more popular in the late 20th century. All of the observances mentioned above can be found spelled as doughnut or donut, depending on who wrote the article.
It’s Doughnut for Me
I spell it as doughnut! That’s how I learned to spell it in the beginning and it just stuck!
How do you spell it? What’s your favorite brand? What’s your favorite variety? Have you ever made your own?
