Coke with peanuts brought up some some conversation a while back on one of my blog posts. Have you ever had Coke with peanuts in the bottle? I think it might be mostly a Southern thing.
I’ve always enjoyed it as a snack, even way back when I was a child! As to when it started, some say it was in the 1920s when Coca-Cola was popular with American farmers in the South. When they took a snack break they had the Coke, they had the peanuts, and they also had dirty hands, so they’d pour the peanuts into the bottle and didn’t have to touch the peanuts with their hands. I don’t know if that’s true or not because down below you’ll see how I do it and I have no idea how to get the peanuts into the bottle without them touching my hand and fingers.
So, here’s how:
1 – Start with an icy cold bottle of Coke. It can’t be diet, won’t taste the same. No Cherry Coke either! Can’t be Pepsi, again it won’t taste the same. I love Dr Pepper but it doesn’t taste good with peanuts. Yes, I’ve tried it! It has to be a bottle too, not a can and not in a glass.
2 – Now, you need a small snack bag of salted peanuts, a couple ounces and they have to be salted. I’ve tried with unsalted, not good. Just choose your favorite brand as long as they’re salted.
3 – Take a few drinks first. You have to do this to make room for the whole bag of peanuts, yes the whole bag!
4 – Next, you need to neatly empty the bag of peanuts into the bottle, so you need a funnel, right? If you try to get the peanuts into the bottle without a funnel they’ll go all over the place and only a few will make it into the bottle. I’m right handed so my left hand is always my funnel. The easiest way to do this is form a funnel by curling your fingers down toward your palm where you’ll have your thumb tucked in sideways. It sort of reminds you of how ASL (American Sign Language) signs the letter E. Your fingers will rest on top of your thumb. Lay the side of your hand on top of the bottle to form the funnel.
Why not use a funnel? You could if the funnel opening is large enough for the peanuts to go thru but even at home I don’t have such a funnel that will allow that…and this snack only comes to mind if you’re out on a hot day and you stop at a gas station for a cold drink…so you don’t have a funnel in your vehicle, or do you?
5 – Pour your peanuts thru your hand/fingers funnel into the bottle. If you have the willpower, wait at least a couple of minutes before taking a drink to let the Coke and salty peanuts blend. Don’t shake to blend, of course you knew that, right?
6 – Now, it’s ready! Ok, don’t choke yourself but go ahead and take a drink. You’ll get some peanuts in that first drink along with the Coke. Swallow the Coke then chew on the wet, salty peanuts!! Then repeat, you’ll be eager to repeat!!
Here’s a video of a New Yorker trying this tasty treat, of course she does it wrong and makes a sticky mess but hey, I think she liked it!
There you go, Coke with peanuts!! Now, wasn’t that tasty? You just couldn’t wait to take a second drink could you?
