BLOGGING GRANDMOTHERS SERIES 2 WITH CHRISTIE FROM SO WHAT? NOW WHAT?
The 12th blogging grandmother to be featured for the Blogging Grandmothers Series 2 is Christie.
NAME OF YOUR BLOG: SO WHAT? NOW WHAT?
SOCIAL MEDIA: Facebook • Google+ • Instagram • Pinterest • Twitter
WHAT IS YOUR FAV SAYING: I don’t know that I can choose a favorite, but here’s one I love: “In a world where you can be anything, be kind.”
WHAT IS THE MOST UNUSUAL THING IN YOUR WALLET OR PURSE: Have you heard of Mom’s Stuff? It’s great for bug bites, and it’s all natural.
DO YOU UNTIE YOUR SHOES WHEN YOU TAKE THEM OFF: Every time.
DOES WISDOM COME WITH AGE: Yes, I believe it does. You have more experience under your belt and more opportunities to learn. Of course, you have to be willing to learn. Not everyone gets wiser with age!
WHAT IS ONE THING THAT DRIVES YOU CRAZY: Again, it may be hard to choose just one thing—I’m pretty crazy—but loud chewing puts me over the edge. Also, I hate to hear people talking unkindly about someone they claim to care about. If I catch myself doing it, I stop immediately, sometimes mid-sentence.
WHEN YOU WERE A CHILD, WHAT DID YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GREW UP: When I was very young, I played at being a teacher or an office worker. When I was a little older, I wanted to be a spokesmodel or a motivational speaker. When I was going to college, I wanted to be a journalist. How did I end up being an insurance company executive? I do not know.
WHAT IS ONE THING YOU REALLY LIKE ABOUT YOURSELF: I always try to keep kindness in the forefront of my mind.
DO YOU HAVE A GREEN THUMB: Not at all. I love plants, but cannot seem to keep them alive. Interestingly, the two plants I own that are thriving were given to me by or in honor of loved ones. One is a plant I received from my coworkers when my father died seven years ago, and a plant my granddaughter gave to me last Mother’s Day.
HAVE YOU GONE THRU MENOPAUSE? IF SO, WAS IT HARD TO DEAL WITH: Every time I think I’m done, I have a little hot flash. 🙂 I think I’m about there, though, and while it wasn’t fun, it wasn’t terrible—not like some of the horror stories I’ve heard from others.
IF YOU COULD CHANGE ANYTHING ABOUT YOURSELF, WHAT WOULD YOU CHANGE: I like to think that I am who I am supposed to be, so I wouldn’t change a thing. But if I’m honest, I would love to be more adventurous and more technology savvy.
WHO IS THE ONE PERSON WHO HAS HAD THE GREATEST IMPACT ON YOUR LIFE AND WHY: Wow, another hard question. If I have to pick only one, I would say my mother. She sets a beautiful example of true unconditional love. She also has shown amazing strength through unimaginable hardship, including the murder of her husband right in front of her when she was young and pregnant with their first child and thousands of miles from her family; and then years later, the sudden, violent death of her youngest son while he was out innocently walking his dog. She could easily have become bitter and closed off, but she hasn’t.
COULD YOU TAKE A VACATION AWAY FROM ALL TECHNOLOGY AND IF SO FOR HOW LONG: Yikes, it would be tough. If I could be available by phone for emergencies, I think I could take a day off. I may even try that to see.
DO YOU KNIT, CROCHET, OR QUILT: No, I am woefully un-gifted when it comes to any type of craft.
IF YOU WERE STRANDED ON A TROPICAL ISLAND, WHAT 3 ITEMS WOULD YOU WANT TO HAVE WITH YOU: Okay, let’s assume that water and food are plentiful on this tropical island. I would take my husband, an iPhone (I mean there would be WiFi and electricity, right?) to download music and books and FaceTime my family, and tubs of sunscreen.
ARE YOU EMBRACING OR FIGHTING GRAY HAIR: So far, I’m highlighting (low-lighting?) to blend in the gray. I’m not completing covering it, but not embracing it either.
IF YOU HAD A TIME MACHINE AND COULD USE IT ONLY ONCE, WOULD YOU VISIT THE FUTURE OR THE PAST AND WHY: The future. I want to know how my grandchildren and their children fare.
DO YOU BELIEVE IN EXTRATERRESTRIALS: It’s hard to believe that Earth is the only planet with life, so I guess that would be yes.
IF A MOVIE WAS MADE OF YOUR LIFE, WHAT ACTRESS WOULD YOU WANT TO PLAY YOU? WOULD THE MOVIE BE AN ACTION FILM, COMEDY, DRAMA, HORROR, ROMANCE, OR SCI-FI: How about Julia Roberts in a dramatic comedy?
HOW OLD DO YOU FEEL: Most of the time, I feel young, so it’s a surprise to look in the mirror and see time catching up with me or to realize that my children are in their 30s.
WHAT ADVICE WILL YOU OR HAVE YOU GIVEN TO YOUR 18 YEAR OLD GRANDCHILD/GRANDCHILDREN WHEN THEY GRADUATE FROM HIGH SCHOOL: This is a timely question, because my oldest grandson graduates from high school this year. I will tell him that time passes quickly, so savor the good times and hang on through the bad. Take advantage of opportunities when they come along, or better yet, make your own opportunities. Be open to new ideas and respectful of others’ viewpoints. Most of all, be kind.
